The Copper Whale Inn story
A piece of Anchorage history
Built in 1939 by local physician Howard Romig, the inn’s main building served as a private residence, corporate office, and various other places of business unique to Alaska before being converted to a bed and breakfast in the 1980s. The West Building was constructed in 1996 to add seven additional rooms for a total of 15 to serve more guests to this quaint boutique hotel.
The Copper Whale Inn was purchased in 2019 by Candice McDonald, a lifelong resident of Alaska. The perfect compliment to Candice’s already-flourishing tour business just five blocks away, pairing locally owned accommodations with high-quality Alaska experiences meant visitors to Alaska’s largest city were provided a seamless vacation, start to finish.
Meet your host
Candice McDonald
Lifelong Alaskan Candice McDonald purchased the Copper Whale Inn in 2019 with an eye toward providing boutique-style lodging in the heart of downtown Anchorage. Already co-owner of a thriving tourism business, Salmon Berry Tours, also located downtown, Candice was familiar with Copper Whale Inn and jumped at the chance to own the historic property.
“Salmon Berry Tours already had a strong relationship with the Copper Whale Inn,” Candice says, “So the purchase made it a natural fit. The two businesses are run separately, but both are also in tune with respect to missions and vision for tourism in Southcentral Alaska.”
